Mary Page Evans Profile: Her Art is on Exhibit at the Delaware Art Museum
Mary Page Evans works directly from nature, seeking to capture a specific landscape, figure, tree, or sky. She is engaged by particularity, making an effort to establish the locale, the time of day, the quality of light. Throughout her career she has returned to specific places, a mountain in Virginia, certain trees, chronicling them in different moods. Not surprisingly, her influences include the French impressionists and post-impressionists, as well as the abstract expressionists. She has painted in Claude Monet's garden at Giverny and names Cezanne as a particular inspiration. Her close friends and mentors included contemporary painters Joan Mitchell and Grace Hartigan, with whom she exhibited at Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore.
Another friend, the painter Gene Davis described her paintings as hymns of unadulterated joy, and this exhibition promises to be a gorgeous celebration of nature and the human form.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Mary Page Evans graduated with a degree in music from Hollins University in Roanoke. After college she studied at the Art Students League in New York and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. She has lived in Delaware for nearly 50 years, since her marriage to former Congressman Tom Evans. Starting in the 1970s, Evans has been honored with many solo exhibitions, especially in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. She is represented by Addison/Ripley Fine Art in Washington, D.C. Her paintings and drawings are in public, private, and corporate collections, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University.
The Delaware Art Museum is delighted to present Painted Poetry: The Art of Mary Page Evans, a retrospective covering more than 40 years of the painter?s distinguished career. he exhibition will include approximately 50 paintings and drawings dating from the 1960s through 2011. The exhibition?s primary motifs are landscapes, gardens, seas, skies, figures and trees. All of these subjects display Evans? extraordinary sense of color and expressive line. Evans' pictures will be paired with the words that inspire her?from artists? musings to contemporary poetry. This exhibition, which brings together works from multiple public and private collections, will be on display at the Delaware Art Museum from March 31 through July 15, 2012.
To accompany the exhibition, the Delaware Art Museum is producing a richly illustrated catalogue with an essay by artist Bill Scott.
